The Size of Our Wounds

Our wounds cannot outgrow us…
Or can they?
Can they grow and grow and grow further
Until they eclipse us
Rendering us their mere shadow?

When our wounds reach further and further down
Like deep tree roots that encage our lungs
Pressing them too small to take in what we need
Or crushing our livers
Until our blood becomes too filthy to sustain us
Is that the day we end?

The day our wounds have grown so wide
Those around us fall into them
Becoming entangled in our disease
Is that the day we end?

The day our wounds have grown so wide
They can reach far enough beyond us
To dig our graves before casting us in
Is that the day we end?
