Planting the Stick

It prowls and paces on the periphery
Of the barrier I erected.
Growls are rumbling from its throat
as it flicks its barbed tail in irritation.

It whispers lies
disguised as cruel truths.
It tries to lure me to the edge
where only damage awaits.

I feel its aura, its influence.
It pulls me lower
with those dark waves,
but it can’t reach to cut me.

Beloved partner on my right,
precious friend on my left:
their words and touch are grounding,
loud enough to drown out the lies.

Help from two directions
increases my stability.
Today I’m light headed, but I remain upright.
Today I struggle, but I remain whole.
