Pendulum

The maximum speed of a pendulum
Is at the lowest point of its arc
It rushes past the centre point
Without pausing or slowing
Eager to return to wherever it currently isn’t

One end for a heart slow and empty
One end for a heart stuttering and faltering

Terminals of each swing
The only places it hesitates
Slowing its momentum
Before gravity pulls it in reverse
Nature’s laws more powerful than the will
To move indefinitely in any one direction

One end for void
One end for fury

One of my biggest mistakes
Most foolishly persistent
Is believing over and over
And over and over
And over and over yet again
That I can figure this out once and for all
Grasp the pendulum in fumbling fingers
And make this rocking stop

One end relieves the other
With a different pit

Believing that if I can describe this journey
Put it to paper in logical words
One day I will solve this puzzle
And decisively it will be fixed
    (I will be fixed)
But this pendulum will not stop for good
Until I’m reduced to ash

One end for dreamless sleep
One end for fluttering bones

All I can do
To calm the quivering twine
Is accept the continuous swinging
And try to reduce the vibrations

One end for rest
One end for action

If I can learn to
Sway with it
Swing with it
Ride with it
Tremble and quiver with it
And make the most of the brief passing
Through that blissful centre
Maybe I can smooth the movement
Adapting long enough
To make it to my end
