Nothing lasts forever
Neither episodes nor greetings
One day, none left
No more
I race to catch them
but I turn around the thick green corner
brushing against it with a rustle
and I can’t see their outline ahead anymore
all I see is green and shadow
down the leafy corridor
…
Pale-faced like the ticking round clock on the wall.
Time after time I cast those stones back to its pinned head
Bloodied it raw — tore the faceless mass to ribbons
A pebble for every tear trapped behind a dry eye
A rock for every scream buried in a tight chest
…
…
I find myself calmed
Somehow in this acceptance
…
To paint love on their walls
Down those long hallways
Meandering through their mind
From yesterday to their future
I wish I could
For them, for all their kind warmth
I wish I knew how to do more
I wish I could do everything they need
I’ll have to settle for my presence
And occasional smiles
And when those fall
Yield in acceptance
That nothing lasts forever
