Friend Across the Ocean

A dear friend is on a journey
They crossed an entire ocean
Hoping to pull themselves from another

They’re searching for anchors and shorelines
Searching for their reason to be
Perhaps searching for the rest of themselves

They took a tiny piece of me with them
A little shard of a rib
I can survive without it
But I hope they bring it back to me

I hope they find what they’re looking for
And while they’re at it
I hope they won’t forget me
But if they did
I would forgive them through that sadness
If they were content and safe
If they were at peace
If they found their reason to be

I hope the universe is taking good care of them
I hope they are at peace there
I hope they bring that peace home with them

I hope they learn to love their freedom
And to care for they
As they have cared for theirs

Most of all
I hope their heart is calmed
As they find their reason to be

They’ll always have a place
Like some dear friends who came before them
In the hollow beneath my rib cage
