Too Solid for That

There’s rarely fights
(We’re too solid for that, after all)
There’s just insidious malcontent
Morphing into anger first
And then, sometimes, madness
Turned inwards, burning from the inside out

My face insists I don’t care
But my organs are beginning
To darken at the sound of your voice

You can’t see it, can you?
Yet, in the moments where you reach for me
I wonder if you sense something in us
Has gone awry

You’ve taken what I can give you
Grown a new life on the back of my kindness
I don’t think I have anything left for you
Certainly nothing you can’t get elsewhere

Maybe you need to cut the chains
Leave the wall behind
Go out onto your own, unshackled
Wander alone
Grow hungry for love
Hungrier with each mile
Bones protruding further by the day
Until, having had enough searching
Lacking the strength to go further
You lower yourself quietly into a ditch
To starve
