Guardian Awakening to a Different Voice

Thoughts, feelings shared
The universe blinks unnoticed
A heart briefly clenches

A sleeping guardian stirs

It recognizes now
One familiar and tamed
It feels the bond
Tethered from its host

The alerted sentry opens an eye

Blurry concepts take shape
Unusually quickly this time
A creature that sleeps between worlds
Extends its mighty arms
A little further than ever before

The quietly fierce and instinct driven
Doesn’t know its place
It has no concept of where it belongs
Or where it doesn’t
So it goes where it pleases

Somewhere among cedars
A climbing ivy, weak but willful
Hears that quiet rumbling:
Ineffective but determined, it
Sprouts another leaf

This sentry
My shield against wounds
Real and imaginary
Well-meaning but wayward beast
This piece of my core
Extension of my heart

Feeling something new
In its will making itself known
I realize with a stutter

It wants to protect you too
