Growing Downwards

I am learning
That I’m at my best
Most respected
Most Appreciated
When I have no mouth

The longer I seal my lips
The more sour it becomes
This metallic silence

I swallow the bitterness
Feeling it radiate to the left
Through my arm
All the way to the palm

I’ll continue to eat some daily
Until it goes down easily
Eventually I’ll be
Transformed — a new me
Held in quiet regard

Today I look in the mirror
Thin lips pressed closed
I think it’s working

It’s working

It’s working! I’m well on my way
Along the path from failure
To silent success!
