Unsummoned

Sometimes
No, often
The words come of their own accord
Unsummoned
But still so welcome

I give them a home
A nest to rest in
To incubate their young
I support them
Caress them
Feed them reinforcement
Let them taste the fears and joys
That sparked that first life in them
Let them hear the loves and insecurities
That drew them towards me

If they’re right, they can stay
If they’re not yet the ones
I turn my back on them
Let them lie in wait
For days, weeks, sometimes months
Biding their time
Hoping to serve me under a later sky
When understanding finally connects
Or at least when their shapes
Better fit my gaps
Or their smooth coolness
Soothes my burning skin

The words that make themselves known
Are almost never wrong
Even if, at first, misunderstood
They eventually ring true
If I’m patient enough
To trust them to speak
To give them life
