Us Starving Wolves

Wolves at night
Charging under the black

Glitter-stars above
Dinner-plate moon lighting our way

We froth at our jowls
We’ve never felt hunger like this before

Critters in these fields fear us
They flee as we draw near

Long grass crumples under claws
Torn weeds settle behind us

Surrounding us, flapping wings rising
They sense what rides with us

Night insects are everywhere but
We don’t notice their chirping

Our senses only attuned to our appetites
The night doesn’t blind us

Thump-thump thump-thump thump-thump…

Driven to feed each other
Eager to die for each other

Bonded by sweat and blood
This pack climbs our final hill

Breathing fast, howling in frenzy
Forming a circle, we guard each others’ backs

From this grassy lookout
We behold our kingdom below

Blood-thirsty and starved, howling
Harmonics our dinner bell

The shadows gather and rise from the ground below
Melting upwards, surrounding our last stand

Salivating, running tongues over fangs, we see
The swarms begin to charge and we know with certainty

We’ll never feel this hungry again
