To the Musician Who Lived Above Me

How have you been?

It’s been a few years
Since I last heard you play
Quiet lullaby strings
Seeping pleasantly through my ceiling

It was always at the perfect time
When I was about to sleep
And you were up there playing the perfect gentle tunes
That lulled me like rocking in mother’s arms

We never met
I know nothing about you
Male, female, old, young…
Do you still live up there?
Did you move away, or did you quit playing?
I hope you just moved away
I hope you’re still alive somewhere, still playing those strings
Maybe even rocking someone else to sleep
Or calming an anxious heart

Whoever you are, I miss your music today
and I hope you’re well.
