A Dessert Metaphor

We’re cookie cutter humans
With different shapes for different rooms

Wait, no

We’re really more like gelatin
Poured into molds to chill overnight
Before being dumped unceremoniously
Onto differently shaped dishes
Quivering as though we could fall over at any minute
For daring to try standing without leaning
On support that completely surrounds us

As soon as we are touched by other hands
We start to soften and weaken
Or split apart
So in order to survive we pour ourselves
Into yet another shape

To resolidify, frigid
Until others dump us out again
And warm us soft before
We repeat

And repeat
And repeat
And repeat

Until we get eaten alive
Or thrown overboard one last time
Straight into the bin
