A Beautiful Summer Night at the Dojo

Summer 2023

Some theory discussion – a good, real, two way discussion, where I both heard and was heard, and the words may have actually mattered. Maybe not. I can’t tell for sure. I can’t get a read on genuineness or impact, but I would prefer to think it was so.

An hour of independent practice and study, silent, just the quiet rustle of hakama and, when doing a little better, the hasuji whoosh or, when not doing as well, a quiet scuffing in the saya. Each in one’s own time and space, one’s own iai, wherever that may be on this day in this place. Each turned inward, alone but in the company of another at the same time.

Harmony.

An offer of humble advice to gently break the long silence, welcomed with a smile and gratitude. The opportunity expands with more questions, seeking detail and refinement. Thoughts shared, possible whys discovered. Discovery together. More connection. Two beginners may be a little further along tonight than they were two hours prior.

Parting with more smiles.

Outside, the night was quiet, the air clean. The city was starting to turn in, and I headed home with calm.
